Image: PS3 fried in mysterious HDMI blaze

A PS3 owner has revealed that his PS3 become burnt and fried a little after plugging in a Psychlone HDMI cable. The big fry up eventually ended after around 10 seconds after the cord had eventually melted off but it still caused quite a bit of damage.

He had his PS3 plugged into an electrical source although it wasn’t running any games at the time of this. He plugged in his Psyclone HDMI cable from his Samsung 32-inch flatpanel tv to the PS3 when the sparks started flying. A flame actually shot up out of the PS3, and sparks were firing out of both ends where the HDMI cable met with the ports. The mess ended in 10 seconds when the cord melted off. Pictures included. We cannot figure out why/how this occurred. No breakers were tripped, no damage or discoloration to any wall outlets or other power sources. Only the HDMI ports.

well first its a picture of the tv not the ps3 and my ps3 was mysteriously floating round my living room this morning! i mean come on will people get a life,no your ps3 wont burn up when you plug hdmi in,it wont shoot outta your tv end either, more like another scamming twat who wants to get some publicity off the internet or for a claim.

probaly some guy had been banging some bird and the womans ex or kids dont like it so they sabotaged the ps3 and tv by taking a lighter to it.i mean i can just write possible scenarios all day long.

just believe this one.ps3 and tv dont burn up through hdmi, nuff said!

His/Her Tv commited suicide, the thought of another 8hr session on the PS3 just drove the Tv to the edge.

    OR

It was ANOTHER firmware update on the PS3 that done this to the TV...

    OR

His 360 Pissed on the HDMI interface......... 1up!

So was the HDMI Cable (In question), a S0NY Branded One?

If not then LOLz were had! (well on my end anyway!!)...
At least the RRoD doesn't take my TV down with it.
Not that I have either the PSTribble nor a working XBOX360 either.
Thinking about the Wii (waiting for a pricedrop).

HDMI 5-volt, 50-ma. 50ma is the same amperage as a 9v battery. Just as with a USB cable which also uses 5 volts, as the usb cable gets longer the power gets lower which is why most external usb drives often require a 1-foot or less usb type-b connector cable because in order for the usb hard drive to function it requires without an external power the full 5 volts a usb port initally sent from a usb port. Most HDMI cables are at least 8 feet or often longer which means that its carrying about 3 volts or less power to make the connection to a TV.

    I would definitly say:
    a) This is a Hoax and someone took a lighter to the back of this TV
    b) This is the world worst designed flawed TV

Without a shadow of a doubt this most certainly not a fault of PS3

    it's because the hdmi cable..

he is not the only one who has had this issue.

Counterfeit HDMI cables: Avoid like plague

    Why ?

    Because of this:

    http://lh5.ggpht.com/_lOwcCe_MOd4/Sq...0/PIMG0133.JPG

I hope this serves as warning. Chinese counterfeit cables have no shielding and that exposes the system to this kind of damage (sparking on the HDMI data lines upon connection)

Never connect your video cables with the system hooked to the wall outlet.
Aways leave the wall outlet be the last thing you connect.

This applies to the XBOX360 and any other kind of electronics you use with TV/home theater sets.
quoted from a very respectable forum.

Ouch, is it just a standard hdmi cable or more like the hd fury which uses an external power supply for long cables?
