Playstation revenues down $1.3 billion in 2009

Sony may well be trumpeting 2009 as a year of success for the PS3, but a new analysis published by trade publication Gamasutra portrays a more worrying picture for Playstation. Apparently, Sony suffered a $1.3 billion year on year drop in overall Playstation revenue!

Sony has described 2009 as “a turning point” for PS3 and ELSPA said the console was last year’s “star” performer, but new analysis from Gamasutra paints a far less rosy picture for the PlayStation platform holder.

More specifically, the site claims that Sony suffered a $1.3bn year-on-year drop in revenue in its PlayStation division and saw its US marketshare revenue drop from 30 per cent to 26 per cent.

That’s not to say that PS3 isn’t on the up – it clearly is. But PS2, once the backbone of Sony’s PlayStation operations, is now a machine in drastic decline. Gamasutra says PS2 revenues were down by $700m year-on-year in 2009, thanks in part to a global price drop.

    QUOTE FROM ORIGINAL ARTICLE

"The numbers bring bad news for Microsoft, too, which suffered its second year of declining revenue."

You miss that bit ZEUS? This is Microsofts second consecutive year of declining revenue.

Also please note this is the "PLAYSTATION" Division. Not just the PS3.
Obvious decline of the PS2, and PSP would hugely contribute to this figure, regardless if the PS3 had been making money or not.

Edit. Just for the record, Nintendos revenue was also down.

guess you felt the need to ignore this part which was the next sentence

However, both hardware and software sales were up in 2009, meaning the losses came from hardware price cuts
nonetheless the recession sucks. nobody is going to make better numbers from previous years until the market stabilizes

Isn't it only natural that the ps2 would eventually run out of steam?, it's on it's last legs, but for a console of it's generation it's done amazingly well, nobody can denie that.

Nope... ps2 will probably be known as 1 of the best if not the best home console ever. For its time on the market, price and pure game library. It had a great run.

I guess you didn't read the article either. Nintendo and Microsoft's revenues are down $200k. That's quite a difference from $1.3 billion. The PSP resulted in a loss of $225 million in unit sales plus $200 million in software losses.

The Playstation division has been taking a hit every year since the release of the PS3. Also, Nintendo and Microsoft took a 6500x less hit. Significant stuff.

Guess I did read the article. I said Microsofts revenue was down. I said Nintendos revenue was down. You just quoted me as not reading the article? Well was I right? Yes I was. Then go and contradict yourself and say "microsoft's revenue are down", confirming what i said was right to begin with. Hah, ok.

Whatever way you want to look at it, Sony's total revenue is still HIGHER than Microsofts, so yeah. It was only a matter of time before the PS2 died completely and it was a big earner for Sony.... but the PS3 has been on the rise for a while.

If you read the article, why did you blame Zeus for the title? How does a loss of 200k compare to 1.3bln? What does a tiny blurb about Nintendo and Microsoft have to do with the title and original topic of the article that somehow and what does it have to do with Zeus? What was Sony's total revenue? They have more platforms than Microsoft and are bleeding money from all of them. From what I recall, they've been bleeding money since the PS3 was released. It's even been said that Sony will probably never make up their total losses in the PS3's life cycle.
