Proposal to accelerate Homebrew Hack on PS3.

I would like to propose a paypal, or some other means to create a pot of donations as a contest dollar. My reasoning? There aren't enough motivations in cracking the PS3 other besides fame or sheer curiosity. Granted, that most of the hacks are done out of sheer need. But when the need is overshadowed by the complexity, then the motivation dissipates.

How did XBOX first get hacked without the use of a mod-chip? If i recall, there was a cash money posted for someone to collect if they could install Linux on the system without the use of a mod-chip. And how long did that take with the right level of 'motivation'?

Remember the first iphone unlock competition? Wasn't the prize for this a car? How long did it take? If I remember correctly, it took less than a month to do this (granted Geohot is genius...)

I know that the PS3's security system isn't anywhere near the simplicity XBOX (if XBOX was simple...), hence the need for the greater motivation to do so.

If someone trustworhty (??), perhaps the owner of this site, or some other person with a proven track record can put up a donation site, and update the total pot on a daily basis for all to see, it would create a global race to get this done. However, there must be a caveat to this. If someone does find a viable exploit, then again 'motivation' of holding the hack until the pot grows bigger will kick in. After all, we're only human. Therefore, there should be a time limit, and if the crack isn't released in a reasonable amount of time, then the pot should be redistributed to the people who made the donations.

    What do you think?

BTW: I am not talking about a ISO loader or anything illegal. Here are some good places to start:

    1. Full hack of OtherOS environment (full machine access, including ability to run Media Player w/ 1080P playback) (3.rd prize)
    2. Find a way to install OtherOS on PS3 Slim models (second prize)
    3. Ability to run Homebrew on 'GameOS' (First prize)

I forget if it was $10,000.00, or $100,000.00.

There definitely was cash involved. If I also recall correctly, the cash was put up by a CEO of a certain company. My memory is slowly coming back now... There was a dispute (down-talk) made towards MS regarding the orignal XBOX design, and how it was nothing more than a value-based PC w/ celeron processor, and a graphics card. I believe this was when the prize money was created to turn it into a full blown linux box 'WITHOUT' use of a mod-chip (soft-mod).

I am pretty certain a team of hackers grabbed the cash and splitted the money.

Sorry it is a good idea but there's a couple of issues.

The first issue is liability; Nobody knows if this is leading anywhere, If any content was to arrive MaxConsole may not be able to host it to to Sony code or C&Ds

The second issue is trust; There's nobody that could realistically hold the money, Time makes people impatient, Paypal refunds/complaints. Financial liability for this site.

    Nope try asking somewhere else.
