I would like to propose a paypal, or some other means to create a pot of donations as a contest dollar. My reasoning? There aren't enough motivations in cracking the PS3 other besides fame or sheer curiosity. Granted, that most of the hacks are done out of sheer need. But when the need is overshadowed by the complexity, then the motivation dissipates.
How did XBOX first get hacked without the use of a mod-chip? If i recall, there was a cash money posted for someone to collect if they could install Linux on the system without the use of a mod-chip. And how long did that take with the right level of 'motivation'?
Remember the first iphone unlock competition? Wasn't the prize for this a car? How long did it take? If I remember correctly, it took less than a month to do this (granted Geohot is genius...)
I know that the PS3's security system isn't anywhere near the simplicity XBOX (if XBOX was simple...), hence the need for the greater motivation to do so.
If someone trustworhty (??), perhaps the owner of this site, or some other person with a proven track record can put up a donation site, and update the total pot on a daily basis for all to see, it would create a global race to get this done. However, there must be a caveat to this. If someone does find a viable exploit, then again 'motivation' of holding the hack until the pot grows bigger will kick in. After all, we're only human. Therefore, there should be a time limit, and if the crack isn't released in a reasonable amount of time, then the pot should be redistributed to the people who made the donations.
What do you think?
BTW: I am not talking about a ISO loader or anything illegal. Here are some good places to start:
1. Full hack of OtherOS environment (full machine access, including ability to run Media Player w/ 1080P playback) (3.rd prize)
2. Find a way to install OtherOS on PS3 Slim models (second prize)
3. Ability to run Homebrew on 'GameOS' (First prize)
