Sony tries to fight PSP piracy by require you to register to go online

Sony is testing out a new piracy system with the new SOCOM game on PSP. Essentially, if you want to go online with the game, you have to be validated before doing so. Therefore pirated copies of the game will not be able to go online without the special voucher code.

<blockquote>Any hopes today marks the beginning of the end of the rampant piracy seen on its PSP platform. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, released today, is Sony's first test at discouraging pirates from downloading PSP software.

Those who purchase SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 are now required to register the title through PlayStation Network before given access to online gameplay. UMD copies of the game will come with a voucher code that must be redeemed online, while digital copies will automatically register in the background. Those who buy a used copy of the UMD can purchase a PSN entitlement voucher for $20 to play online.

We spoke recently with John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, about this new initiative to combat piracy on PSP and when we may see it appear on other titles and platforms.

For SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 on PSP, players must now register to play online if they buy a retail copy. Will this security measure be put in place for all online PSP titles going forward? And could we see this being used for online PS3 titles as well?

John Koller: SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3 is the first title to introduce the new online entitlement feature. As with many programs, we're investigating future opportunities, but we have no announcements to make on it at this time.</blockquote>

I'm suprised that this hasn't been done to counter piracy a long time ago. Given the added fact that it limits resale value, I am genuinely suprised developers havn't added it to console games much as they do for PC games.

MS for one wouldn't have to worry about negative press from bans as pirates would not be able to play online without the codes, plus they would not risk loosing revenue from DLC from pirates.
    My gaming systems -
    Consoles - Wii, Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox 360 Jtag Jasper 2TB 3.5" HDD, PS3 60GB UK launch version, PS3 hacked with 500GB 3.5" HDD (2TB wouldn't work ).

    PC - i7 3930K @4.6GHZ, Asus Rampage IV Extreme, 2xRadeon 7970, 32GB DDR3, 4TB Raid HDD (4X Samsung Spinpoint F3, SSD boot drive OCZ Vertex 3 120GB )

These are gaming systems I am biased towards (may as well throw in everything from last gen and before as if the PC can emulate it I am likley to have it)

I didnt realise that pirates can play games online, I thought it required that latest system software. Or was that just for the store?

Couldn't you use Xlink Kai or some other network instead?

I don't see how it stops piracy it just means you don't get online gameplay. No big loss for a lot of people.

And of course if you REALLY want to play online you can just pay the $20 for the code. They'll still come out ahead.

so cost of preowned game + cost of voucher = more than a new copy, looks a whole lot more like they are trying to fcuk the preowned market than the pirate one, after all i was that desperate to play it online i could pirate the game and just buy the key, lot cheaper than paying for the game either new or preowned.

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

Poor, poor Sony. Who care. I don't like that game, I don't play on linee. There si Kai software to play in ad-hoc with other users.

    Sony is bottomed.

That was when? 8+ years ago? xD Now they probably validate and activate the codes before they give them out. Much like their cash cards for PSN.
