BBC and NHK test 24Gb/s super hi vision transmission

at a staggering resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels requiring an astounding 24Gb/s of broadcast bandwidth the BBC transmitted a gig by The Charlatans from the UK to Japan, the BBC says it hopes to broadcast using this new format by the time of the London 2012 Olympics to displays set up for public viewing around the home countries, NHK have said they hope to start domestic broadcasting in super hi vision by 2020.

oh and yes, they are working on a 3d version.

i think we are going to need faster connections and they are going to have to be cap free to begin with and lets face it even bdxl is toast if we want to be able to record anything.

so thats hd tv 2008-2010, 3d tv 2011-2012, glasses free 3dtv 2012-2014, oled tv 2014-2019 and then super hi vision 2020-????. new tv's for everyone over and over again?

since we are told the ps3 will have a 10 year lifespan (till 2015) dos this mean that the ps4 will have to offer super hi vision as standard to stop it being outdated in 5 years?

The technology, 16 times sharper than HDTV, has been developed by Japanese public broadcaster NHK.

The standard could be used on giant public viewing screens, some of which may be in place for the 2012 Olympics.

NHK hope to broadcast in Super Hi-Vision by 2020, although no television currently exists that can fully show off the 7680-by-4320 pixel signal.

The "full HD" currently available means a display of 1920 by 1080 pixels - one-fourth the number of pixels both vertically and horizontally.

Dr Keiichi Kubota, head of research and development at NHK, described the transmission as a "historic moment".

we now know the Xbox One's game licensing policy was written from the ground up for companies. It's aggressively anti-consumer and anti-middle class, and it outright ignores underprivileged gamers. It's gross, despicable, greedy, pathetic, cowardly and out of touch with a growing global resentment for corporations. - Polygon 7th June 2013

well to be honest i doubt that this will be for home use.
i mean most people have a 40 inch hdtv on that screen size most people cant even tell the difference between 720p vs 1080p so i would say that 1080p will be sufficient for the foreseeable future..

maybe 2160p but 4320p would be pushing it to far, you would need a 80 to 120 inch tv to see all the detail and most of us don't have a house that big

at least when they try to sell you 3d tv you can see a difference

well nhk seem to think differently if they plan on starting domestic broadcasts in 2020, my guess is that by then oled will be economical and the result will be a big jump in screen sizes, i have a little oled tv (a sony) in my kitchen and in all honesty its the best picture in the house, its so good its as good as a crt screen for viewing angles and even though its a really small screen it has amazing clarity, i cant wait till i can buy a 100+ inch 14:9 oled that i can hang on the wall in the family room, i think i'd be in nerd nirvana with that and wii sports HD, although i'd fear for my sanity if ea use rooney as their poster boy for fifa '18 when such tv's are possible, bad enough when its just box art but that face on such a large screen would be more damaging that any horror movie cold ever be and if its in 3d i'd need a sick bag to hand at all times.
