Here is my situation..will explain everything to help. Thanks for reading.

I had an old unit get RROD. Tried RROD X clamp repair to no avail. Noticed a capacitor had corrosion on it and looked a bit bubble at the top. Figured it was all she wrote.

Here is where I messed up without knowing about it.

Bought a used unit off ebay with a DVD drive not working thinking I could take the one from the RROD unit and place it in the ebay unit. Of course I have since found out from an archive thread here (http://www.maxconsole.net/archive/in...p/t-88967.html) that there is some sort of DVD issue. I am a bit confused on what to do from here on out or am I SOL?

So I basically got a RROD with the correct DVD in it but fried...and a working unit with a DVD not know to it, and no idea where old DVD is/was in it...contacted seller, he has no idea where the old drive is and received it that way.

What can I do to get it fixed?

On a side note, is it possible to take the hard drive and a few games to a friends house, copy the games on to the hard drive, bring them back home and play off hard drive? Will the play DVD only thing still allow me to play a hard drive game and read the disk properly to get by?

Thank you very much for your time with this matter. It is for my young son and I have spent way too much time and money to buy a new one or go any further...i feel bad for the kid because he does take care of his stuff and this was out of his control, and out of warranty.
