Wow, that is, indeed, a good strategy! Initially, I never really saw OnLive taking off, but after seeing demos, and now, this news, I can see it being the next big thing. They need to improve the quality of the service and overhaul the pricing, but if they play their cards right, OnLive could be the next big thing.

    Anyone remember the Nuon.
    No?...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuon
Well, that's because they wanted to do the same as this, but for DVD players.
Only ever had about 8 games released before it died (about 30 odd were never released though).
I'm not sure that bumping the cost of hardware is the way to go.....

    *edit*

I also dont understand why its in the PS3 category! Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will always be leaders in the the game business and that being said OnLive will not be the next big thing! However i do like it being integrated into HDTVs as i like my Samsung LED 8000 series with the samsung apps, able to stream music and movies, so able to stream games would be a nice addition! That being said i will not buy a new tv just to have Onlive as i dont really use any of the samsung apps i just like knowing they on their!

Facebook on Laptop works well, some things are easier to access from the iPhone
Facebook on iPhone works well, some things are easier to access from the Laptop
Facebook on LEDTV works but, it takes time to navigate with the remote and i'll just use the iphone or laptop, however if i wouldn't have a laptop or iphone its a way to access facebook.

google maps and games is same as facebook so not really good for the tv

Streaming the movies is nice on tv but it dont play everything so unless they were to fix it i not happy with it like for example bluray rips mkv do not play and XBMC 10 will probally always be the way to go, only thing that plays everything well.

Pandora, Netflix, hulu, Vudu are nice to have on the tv tough

OnLive would work well since it will have a remote control and be nice for people that dont own PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii like i do but let me say this:

Some games are better if played Wiimote style! Example Monopoly is played easier on iphone and wii and not so easy with a ps3 or xbox 360 remote.

Some games are played easier with a remote for example i much rather play Halo, Call of duty, Fighting games, etc with a xbox 360 or ps3 remote then play with the wiimote or iphone.

Some games like Final fantasy i am mainly want to play offline but would welcome online.

Some games like call of duty i like playing trough the game but then i mainly will play online after.

Some games are Cool in 3d while some games are not.

With all that being said as i think yall get the point, this is not going to be the next big thing, its going to be something that may or may not do ok but will not take over! The next big thing will have everything the PS3 has and more.

Why i said the PS3 well let me say this.
The next big thing will have 3D like the PS3 some like, some dont, some games are good in 3d and some are not.

The next big thing will have online gaming like the ps3 and xbox 360, unlike the wii has however Microsoft creates the online code and all games put that in, something sony should take notes on. Some people play online only, some people play offline only, and some people play offline and online.

The next big thing will have virtual chat like ps3 playstation home. not everyone is into it but its a nice thing to have and ps3 is only one with it.

The next big thing will have Offline only games which Onlive doesnt have.

The next big thing will have regular remotes as sony has basically carried theirs from the first playstaion with only adding stuff like Dual Joysticks, Dual shock, Sixaxis, Bluetooth. I dont see a need for them to add anything new. Wii should have set more games to work with the classic controller.

The next big thing will have Wiimote style remotes as sony has with move cause stuff like family games, boom blox, etc is better played with them.

The next big thing will Have Bluray as PS3 has and Full Bluray 3D like a hardware built bluray3d player. Microsoft should pay the money to sony to get bluray into their next xbox.
Nintendo will could do without but keep dvd atleast!
PS3 was the best built machince especially for the future but they had bluray which was expensive at the time but this time stay with bluray and not try something new.
1080p should be on every game in the next big thing, no 720p stuff however by the that time maybe set it support higher then 1080p but evything min of 1080p

NUON and OnLive are very different. OnLive stream the games think of it like streaming netflix of videogames, and for the NUON it was a stand alone application running in the player.

uh... the technolgy may be different, but the idea of packing a gaming system into home electronics (other than a games console), is the same.
Either way anything that adds unwanted features at a cost will probably fail (like the nuon).
However if it's free, it might have some limited success.
    just my 2 cents...

Steam had 1500 games on sale the whole xmas, and you got many retail games for almost free while it lasted.

OnLive can never compete with STEAM.

One thing i will never do, is to buy a brand new retail game on either Steam or OnLive.

Brand new Retail games is mostly 20% cheaper on retail disc, than the download version.

Something just fucked up on pricing of new downloadable retail games. Even old retail games on XBLA is usually 3-6 times more expensive than the physical disc.. HELLO?

Games on Discs is cheaper than downloadable versions, and you get to own them physically too.

OnLive dont do anything to attract buyers, so they will maybe fail sooner or later. Without discounts, special deals etc.. its hard to get alot ot users.

Physical stores attracts people with sales to stay alive, and thats why most stay alive.

Oh man... the Phantom. I haven't heard of "them" in ages... But it does remind me of OnLive's "strategy."
