The sci-fi future of Star Trek is almost here thanks to Microsoft Research and the Kinect device
Imagine a world where you can reach out, grab 3D objects, throw them all within a vitual space, even use a 3D phone sitting in your hand as if it is the real thing. Holodesk brings this to you today!
Something out of the future. Something from Star Trek. Nope, HoloDesk, it is here today and happening now at Microsoft Research!
Well the next step, I guess is to some how have a force field, so it feels like you are infact holding that virtual 3D object in your hands. The system combines an optical see-through display that uses a Kinect to create the illusion of a user interacting with 3D graphics. The 3D rendered scene is then displayed through a half silvered mirror. this allows people to reach under the mirror and interact with projected 3D objects in all kinds of ways.
Facial recognition is able to track the angle at which you're looking at the display so every object you interact with has spot on accuracy regardless of your viewing angle. The HoloDesk is one of the best uses of the Kinect to come out in quite some time and is definitely worth checking out. The details are rather skimpy in terms of what was used to develop the application from a programming standpoint but it's safe to assume the Kinect SDK used.
I might be dreaming, but you never know, a year ago, something like this video below would have been impossible to imagine, but now thanks to Kinect it is happening right now in front of your eyes, see the sci-fi future building one step a time right here in the your time and space!
