Exclamation PS Vita suffers yet another sales humiliation

PlayStation Vita Sells 42,000 in Third Week

Media Create figures are in for Japan for the last week of 2011, and it is bad news again for 'PS Vita' dropping again by almost half from the week before, even the old PSP outsoold the new PS Vita!

This weeks sales charts from Media Create are out and once again the PS Vita has taken a beating slipping down the charts and being soundly beaten by the PSP with not a single PS Vita game in the top 20.

With Nintendo platforms holding 13 of the top 20 and 11 out of the top 13.

Here's the full top 20 for the week. Life to date sales are in parentheses.

    • 10.Wii Party (Wii, Nintendo) 584,545 (2,123,773)
Maybe the only way for Sony to beat Nintendo is to slash prices by 100% as this week sales included already the 20% price cut that 'retailers' made themselves just to move more units, which does not seem to have helped overall, as you can see sales are falling!

Our thanks to 'Billysastard' for always digging up the Japanese sales figures!

In Japan at least it looks like Nintendo land.

The PS3 is catching up the Wii!!! Of course it would only take another 14 years for it to be equal in sales.

Any bets on where the bottom of the Vita sales will sit until some piece of software comes along to move some units?

My money is slightly less then 20K units a week on average until something like a Monster Hunter or Final Fantasy hits. That is of course if the big games don't get canceled due to poor sales of the system.

As a side note its nice to see that the PS2 is still managing some decent numbers, Sony should refocus its efforts on the PS2 at least that system made money for them.

the figures so far seem to suggest that they are bad, very bad.

3 weeks after launch and its already being discounted by 20% at retail yet still no pick up in sales, stores still have launch stocks and sony must be filling warehouses with unsold units as new ones are made, at present all they can hope for is that people in the usa or europe will buy it but if more companies follow activision and pull out it doesnt look very promising.

One can't help but wonder how Sony is going to deal with this.

It's not like Sony is making a bunch of money in its other divisions at this point in time.

Maybe its movies and music are profitable but with out checking into them, I can't be sure.

The one thing I do know about movies and music is that the profits are way down over just a few years ago.

looking at the latest sankei reports on sales there is worse news coming.....

3ds became the highest selling console in a single month since records began
3ds software sales were the highest on any platform this year (nov - nov)
3ds mario kart 7 was the biggest selling title of the year (2011)

as you said moab really needs a monster hunter or final fantasy right now to get it up and running, ffx is coming but its still a long way off and realistically the only chance of a monster hunter anytime soon would be a port of the psp version that people have just bought so with both psp and 3ds monster hunter games already high in the charts its not too likely and we already know that mh4 is a 3ds title (supposedly exclusive), the chance of a grand tourismo or gta game soon is pretty much zero so that leaves only a rehash of a rehash in the form of metal gear to lift sales (gt, metal gear and gta are the top selling games on playstation platforms so it makes sense that they would be the best chance of boosting sales).

It seems odd too me that the 3DS actually seems to have picked up sales since the Vita launched... It's as if a million people where waiting to see what Sony was going to do and upon seeing it said "Oh so its more expensive and has nothing good on it...." I know the 3DS launch lineup was weak but at least you know with Nintendo eventually your going to get some great games, with Sony you have to wait and see the game on the shelf before you can believe it.

Lest anyone forget the tragedy that was GT on the PSP.

That game could be partially responsible for Vita's poor sales, people really wanted a portable version of GT, and when they finally got it, the game was weak.

I have just had an epiphany.... If Sony could get PD to do a quick and dirty port of GT3 or GT4 from the PS2 and just port it over to the Vita maybe add some sort of online component they could probably generate some interest in the Vita. Of course PD would probably take a year to do such a project but it would be worth it.

Thinking about it more, I am somewhat amazed that Sony hasn't at least tried something like that already, could have been a launch title.

sony hasnt done it because sony does as little as possible to get the most money. if its not enough, they backtrack and give consumers what they should have from day 1.

expect the vita to spiral down to death before sony does anything the consumer wants
My ps3 is way better then yours.

It does seem as though Sony has developed an allergy to making money these days.

    The problem is Sonys attitude

What it all boils down to is not price but attitude.
Tying the consumer hand and feet and trying to dictate EXACTLY what the buyer may and may NOT do is a poor strategy. People were conned into buying the PS3 then Sony withdrew stuff they sold without the buyers consent, now its biting them.

I myself used to be something of a fanboy (got the Ps1,Ps2, Ps3 & PSP classic) but these days I am very wary about Sonys offerings. Will propably be bying XBOX 720 rather than PS4.

I suspect your in the vast majority of gamers, after all the PS2 sold what 120 million units? I myself have owned at least 2 PS1's 4 PS2's and 1 PS3... With no desire to replace it if it blows up. It's a shame what Sony has done with what I thought was the strongest gaming brand on the planet. I knew what was going to happen with the PS3 and Wii this generation before launch but I could not have predicted it would be so bad. I mean I bought a PS3 at least with the idea I would get to play a new Twisted Metal an awesome GT game and maybe a new version of Road Rash... Also was praying for a Symphony of the Night part 2 or something. Why will companies not make something that has replay value?

I think they are making a new Twisted Metal but I think its focus on the "Online experience" will dilute its play

I myself will probably not be buying the PS4 or the Vita, not sure about going with MS next gen myself but it would be an easier sell to me than anything from Sony at this point in time. Nintendo Wii-U thing looks interesting and I will probably get one around launch.

Sadly for S0NY this is not 2004, and they do not have a "PS2" kind of victory to roll off on.
As a XBOX(1) Banner Bearer at the time. (Thanks mostly in part to Steel Battalion). I was generally fond of the XBOX and then there came the Softmods, Modchips, and then a little something called XBMC.
Sadly the XBOX had a more Western following then I'd had liked (read JRPGs or a severe and alarming lack ther of), cooled me on it though. Thankfully I had fond memorys of DOA3, DOAXVB, as well a the Project Zero Games that came out for the old Gal.

So when the PSP first came out, and the Hype was still generally good for S0NY, I kinda had a hope that S0NY could have finally accomplished the One thing that it predecessors failed to do. Knock Nintendo into a crocked hat. And, who would have dared to doubt it at the time, that S0NY couldn't actually pull it off either?

Then what happens, S0NY flood the Market with nasty crappy UMD Movies, that nobody wanted, or even asked for, they completely failed to press the PSP, opting to concentrate on the PS3 at that time, leaving the PSP to rot. Then to eventually languish in refresh Hell, then they try to thrust the "Go" on us. thankfully that plan backfired.

So several Years latter, we have more, and more aggressive anti-consumer actions taken robbing innocent People of the Features (and or Functions), of the Device(s), they have purchased. (i.e. Linux on the PS3), as well as having other features cut, out entirely. This has emboldened S0NY to continue such actions with the Vita, 'cause S0NY know that it's "Defense Force" will swallow anything that comes out of S0NYs rear-end gratefully.

Sadly (for them i.e. S0NY), the rest of the World has finally managed to grow a collective Braincell and finally realized what a Joke S0NY is becoming.

S0NY, could do a fair bit better (in sales), then just by dropping the Price, they really need to repeal all the Anti-Consumer DRM BS that they have packaged into the Vita. ONLY when this happens (if ever!?), could I honestly start to give a thought to ever picking One of these things up.

And if most of the World should also feel like that, as well. then S0NY will have no one to blame when they can't find any decent Developers to code for their hunk of junk and everybody starts chanting that age 'ol PSP standard "WHERE THE F*** ARE THE GAMES?!"

The joke here being that the old time PSP owners (like myself with a European Launch Day Model), have already had our laughs with S0NY the last go'round. Oh well Plus ça change then...
