Exclamation Sony: PlayStation 4 unveiling not coming soon

Sony says it's not quite game over for the PlayStation 3.

Contrary to reports, Sony does not plan to announce a new home video-game console at a trade show in June, said Kazuo Hirai, the company's deputy president.

With all the 'tech blogs' and 'other rumors' floating around on the 'net that 'chip makers' are busy building PS4 parts, and 'developers' are working on 'next-gen' games, Sony was forced to answer the 'press' asking tough questions during this week's CES 2012 show, and here is Sony's statement in regard to 'their future plans' and 'if PS4 is coming or not?':

"We're not making announcements at E3," Hirai told a roomful of reporters at the recent CES 2012 show.

The five-year-old PlayStation 3 will have a 10-year life cycle, Hirai said.

For Sony's next console, the company will not deploy a streaming delivery system like OnLive, or fully cut out disc retailers like Best Buy and GameStop, Hirai said. While Sony has increased the number of games and other media available for download or streaming through its networks, most people cannot be expected to frequently download several gigabytes worth of data, which can be a time-consuming process, he said.

Like Microsoft has done with the Xbox 360 through Kinect, Sony is trying to extend the life of the PlayStation 3 through new accessories, like the Move controller wand, and initiatives like 3-D games. There are dozens of 3-D games now available, Hirai noted.

"We are definitely, from a Sony perspective, very committed to 3-D," Hirai said. "It's going to take a little while."

Sony CEO Howard Stringer, who also attended the gathering on Tuesday, compared the uptake of 3-D gaming and video to that of color television.

"3-D is waiting to happen," he said. "It's an inevitability. So be patient."
So there you have it, they are comitted to 3D and keeping 'blu-ray' format, and pushing it for a few more years still!

Depending on the Move wand and 3D support will not keep you in business for long.

If they want to survive (even as the underdog)... they better release PS4 and quick. There is nothing exciting about PS3 today.

I agree with you on this one. -- As the actual 'Father of PlayStation' has retired from Sony, and moved onto his own personal ideas away from the corp.

yeah not just that, but between the playstation phone, the playstation tv and the early bad start to the playstation vita, the troubles sony has with playstation network and playstation 3, it would be a good time for sony to change out from the playstation name despite it being one of their more popular brands.

i said it before, sony has whored out the playstation name. it was one thing to have a playstation 1 and playstation 2, but its a little overkill now.

the only other company as bad now is apple with the iEverything, but i isn't really a brand, apple is. i think the PS Vita is an early indication of this change as more emphasis is on the vita. no one called the psp 'portable' but people do call the ps vita just 'Vita'

Sony are probably just going to keep ps3 alive by ditching ''NEW ACCESSORIES'' at people. what about NEW GAMES to use our pretty NEW ACCESSORIES?????????

I've got a fat ps2 (year 2000) and honestly I can't get any games for it that aren't preowned! and when THAT was ten years old, sony had ditched the entire thing YEARS AGO!!! So sony are just telling people that their going to get 10 years out of a ps3, I don't think anyone will. LIES!!!

I don't mean offence, I am just expressing my opinion on this, so don't be offended if you love sony because I still get the ps2 out every now and then and play tony hawk pro skate 4.
    I LOVE ps1 and ps2!
Not sure how anyone could get offended, you just said the truth.

I too love my PS1 and PS2 but my PS3 is a disappointment to me, mostly I suspect because I was expecting so much out of it. My Wii I was pleasantly surprised but probably because I expected so little out of it.

PS1 and PS2 over delivered so much entertainment it was redonkulous lol

A game system remaining in the market is a fantastic thing for consumers and it is unfortunate that some of you don't see this! The longevity of a product is considered to be stellar in the business world, and yet some commenters on this post have a problem with this and sees a sign of weakness??? Are you f*cking kidding me? I own a 360, PS3, and Wii and I shelled out top money on the release dates, and I am more of a MS fanboy than anything. I am in no way going to buy the new Nintendo console out because the Nintendo Wii did not redeem the failure of the game cube and it really was overall a kiddy console. I'm not ever going to rush into a Microsoft product launch day since it took them mere months of them rereleasing the 360 console with an hdmi port. Oh... My console RROD on me 4 times in a row now too... The PS3 was the most consistent game system of them all (except losing PS2 backward compatibility and extra usb ports), and with free PSN it only made the industry that more competitive. We as consumers are getting the more value in the PS3 if they are only focusing on this game system for the next few years.

Also, environmentally speaking, a cycle of 3-5 years for a game system is a horrendous thing to applaud. This should be condoned...

It's definitely worth keeping your console as long as you can! But when buying a new system I think that if you want the best value for money and longest lifespan it is worth saving up for the latest system
