It will be able to stream music and video to other devices
Google Inc. is apparently developing a home entertainment device that will stream content wirelessly throughout the home and will be marketed under the company's own brand.
It appears than Google is very busy this part of the year, releasing new version of Chrome for desktop and Android, developing terminator-like glasses, preparing the Google Drive service and now is reportedly making some kind of wireless Home Entertainment player, like the Apple TV. We don't know much about it yet but Google wants it branded under his own name and hardware & software perfectly aligned for a glorious experience.
The player will be able to stream music, video and more (Games and Apps we guess) to other devices in the house. It will be based on Android off course.
According to the Wall Street Journal:
As soon as we get more detail we'll spread the word .Google Inc. is developing a home-entertainment system that streams music wirelessly throughout the home and would be marketed under the company's own brand, according to people briefed on the company's plans.
The effort marks a sharp shift in strategy for Google, which for the first would time would design and market consumer electronic devices under its name. The company has mainly focused on developing the Android operating system that powers devices such as smartphones, tablets and televisions. It has also allowed other companies to build and brand the hardware that uses it.
Google's Android unit has led a multi-year effort to develop the new entertainment device, which may possibly stream other digital media besides music and is expected to be unveiled later this year, people familiar with the matter said.
The new device, along with Google's pending purchase of device maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., shows how serious the Internet giant is about wanting to control both the software and hardware process, a formula used by rival Apple Inc.
