Exclamation New firmware 1.61 for Playstation Vita announced

This firmware is already available to download

Sony has announced that this 1.61 firmware adds in some useful features.

Playstation Vita will be launched on February 22 in North America and Europe, and February 23 in Australia, but Sony has already announced a new firmware update for it.

It's the 1.61 version, and it includes some useful features for us.

    The list of changes below:

    • A new application, (Maps), has been added to the home screen.

    • In addition to photos, you can now take videos using the Photo application.

    • You can now publish stories about the products that you rate in PlayStation Store to Facebook.

    • In near, players’ information is now displayed on the Discoveries screen. On this screen, a list of the online IDs of up to 100 players that you have encountered, and the number of times that you encountered each player, are displayed. Tap an online ID to display that player’s profile screen.

    • The Mac OS version of Content Manager Assistant for PlayStation has been released. The Windows version has also been updated.
You can download Content Manager Assistant from here.

If I was a Vita owner I would be praying these updates slow down in the future (after the good features have been added of course.) Nothing like trying to sign on to PSN to play a game with your friend only to be assaulted with a firmware update (I am going by my past PS3 experience here, so maybe the Vita firmware updates are a lot smoother and faster?)

Just a quick question out of morbid curiosity, for Vita owners out there.

How fast does the firmware update? I know on the PS3 it seems to take forever and always for me at least was faster to download it on my PC and update via USB. (Still took forever.)

still the same. 90-100MB firmware files
    download slow as.
    more annoying is the games
    ridge racer = 750MB
    downloaded first update yesterday...310MB
what happened to the old days where a 1GB game only required 3 to 10 MB patch.
sorry i got 3G as well.
you can do **** with 3G.
    download update = need wifi
    download game =need wifi
download game patch = need wifi
what the ****, only thing i can do on 3G network is use browser and browse PSN.
    stupid stupid stupid

because RR also offered new maps/cars.

updates on the vita wont slow down, each time sony needs to make changes which i hope they do a update will be done.

id like to have the option to change the icons smaller, its pointless in having loads of windows and massive icons when you can easily fit more on the screen.

id also like the option to change the menu layout, something simple like the ps3 would be nice, also the option to use buttons to run games/apps would be ideal aswell.

hopefull things like this will be added in the updates.

A new car and A new track, not plural.
a single new car and a single new track shouldnt be a 310MB update on a 750MB game that already has 3 cars and 3 tracks.
and if i have to update every week for the weekly DLC, the memstick isnt going to stand a chance.
stick up for sony all you want, they've majorly fumbled the ball on this one.
    i was expecting more WOW
    all im getting is HUH

im ?? to how you know exactly how big the game is, and why you think a track/car cant equal 350MB, i cant get how your complaining as 350mb is nothing.

you was expecting WOW from what has allways been a turd launch title since way back on the PSX, so id say your the fool for assuming RR to be something excellent, so how am i defending sony, when its you expecting a sh1t game to be awesome??

end of the day your b1tching over a little confusion in dlc and patches, game patches are sometimes small, dlc is highly likely to be arround this size.

your b1tching over 3g, erm durrp 3g is never as fast as wifi, its the provider thats to blame not sony lol that is why i didnt get the 3g version because vodafone cant even provide a decent mobile signal in my area so feck trying for 3g.

and im sure others would agree, that this would be the purpose of 3g for fast browsing, sync trophies ect when away from home, but if theyre to download games theyd use the wifi to save on data charges.

but again it seems its you thats to blame for disapointment, you had high expectations on a known turd game, you failed to grasp teh concept that 3g is cr@p compared to wifi, if you thought youd be able to download games super fast just like wifi then LOL

first off, i'm a ridge racer fan from ridge racer 1 and revolution.
second, the update was an update!!!!! not a DLC. otherwise i wouldnt be complaining, i been playing games since the atari 2600, i know the frickin difference.
Third, i Used Wifi to download ridge racer, thats how i know how big the fuckin thing is.
forth, i work out bush 200 kilometres from one town, 300 from another doing fly in fly out week on week off, 3g is the only option as telstra has supplied a 3g tower for the mine site and camp.
fifth, my bitching over 3g has nothing to do with speed, its got everything to do with sony blocking the ability to use it for downloading games, updates and the like.

Yep I have to agree, I live on tropical island, and only places with internet is in the city as it is dsl (fast) but copper can only go so far, so 90% of time you using one of thousands of 3G towers, and they are fast, I have 3G stick in my computer and I pump thru 10gigs a month easy with it.

To be able to get wifi I would have travel 35km into the nearest town and grab it from someone that paying monthly for copper internet and has a router.

For some areas the Vita will never take off because of that, it totally limits the portable usage, makes no sense.

Australian 3G (or 3.5G as telstra call it) is quite good, i'm on DC-HSDPA (Dual Connection, although on site theres only 1 tower so only single connection) i get 6 with peaks at 8MBytes per sec in city and 2 to 3MB per sec on camp.
can buzz through 12GB in a week and a half, although its quite expensive to buzz through data like that ($150 per recharge)

I live 6 miles out of town in the middle of no where and I'm getting a pretty good connection. It's acturally seems faster than my wifi.

Here's hoping Sony wake up and make it more worth having 3G model by letting us download and update via 3G.
At the moment when I'm at camp I have to activate a personal hotspot on my iPhone, and it is hell expensive for data through a pre-paid phone account.
