I honestly am worried about Sony's future. Nintendo bounced back but they at least had the portable market during its bad times with the N64 and the GC. Sony at this point has neither one and non of its other divisions are not doing that great.
So many factors are working against Sony right now that its hard for me to see a way for them to dig them selves out. I mean I can point to a few things they could do to get the ball rolling again but I suspect even if they did all the right things at this point in time, it could be too little too late.
I think Sony did drop the ball on a couple of things for the Vita but it was still the better machine VS the PSP by leaps and bounds, I mean they ditched UMD that alone was an upgrade, but then they back tracked on insisted on a new memory card format, why not stick with at least the same sticks the PSP used? Then at least PSP users could say "Cool my old stick I can still use it on my new machine!" but no... Way to stick it to your own customers Sony. Other than that flaw and some of Sony's own software problems (that could be fixed...) like the insistence on a card being married to one machine and one account... Some things they could do to at least appear more consumer friendly. The Vita baring its stupid over price memory card format is a superb machine from what I understand and honestly I did want one when they first announced it and its cart based games, of course Sony wanted a new format. (its like they are addicted to having some new format just for the sake of having a new format...)
I agree 100% that at this point in time I wouldn't want to make games for the Vita either, no install base to sell too. Thats the old pattern of hardware, if it doesn't start selling pretty soon in its lifespan no one wants to risk making games on it, so no one buys the machine. Like you said its a tough death spiral to get out of.
