Exclamation Cave cancels two Playstation Vita games

    Shirotsuku and a shooter

Cave announced that two upcoming PS Vita games has been cancelled.

In the Tokyo Game Show, Cave announced they were working on two Playstation Vita games, a Sengoku themed social game titled 'Shirotsuku' and an unnamed shooter. Bad news for them, as both titles has been cancelled.

Makoto Asada, Game Development Manager at Cave said:

"When we announced our PlayStation Vita games we mentioned one of them is a shooter. We’re just getting started on it so there isn’t much I can say about it at the moment. Any platform we release a game on whether it be Xbox 360 or Vita we make our games specifically for that platform. The shooting game we make for Vita will be a title that matches the characteristics of that hardware."
Asada also said that the Vita shooter was a new and original game, not an arcade port.

you can understand this, without hardware sales there is no point in wasting money making a vita game, and without decent new games there iss no point in wasting money buying a vita, its a vicious downward spiral that, unfortunately for the vita, sony simply cant afford to dig themselves out of.

I wouldn't call the Vita dead yet, but the diagnosis is pretty grim to say the least.

Sony has to get some must have titles out this holiday season or the 3DS is going to be even more dominant then the DS was VS the PSP.

I honestly am worried about Sony's future. Nintendo bounced back but they at least had the portable market during its bad times with the N64 and the GC. Sony at this point has neither one and non of its other divisions are not doing that great.

So many factors are working against Sony right now that its hard for me to see a way for them to dig them selves out. I mean I can point to a few things they could do to get the ball rolling again but I suspect even if they did all the right things at this point in time, it could be too little too late.

I think Sony did drop the ball on a couple of things for the Vita but it was still the better machine VS the PSP by leaps and bounds, I mean they ditched UMD that alone was an upgrade, but then they back tracked on insisted on a new memory card format, why not stick with at least the same sticks the PSP used? Then at least PSP users could say "Cool my old stick I can still use it on my new machine!" but no... Way to stick it to your own customers Sony. Other than that flaw and some of Sony's own software problems (that could be fixed...) like the insistence on a card being married to one machine and one account... Some things they could do to at least appear more consumer friendly. The Vita baring its stupid over price memory card format is a superb machine from what I understand and honestly I did want one when they first announced it and its cart based games, of course Sony wanted a new format. (its like they are addicted to having some new format just for the sake of having a new format...)

I agree 100% that at this point in time I wouldn't want to make games for the Vita either, no install base to sell too. Thats the old pattern of hardware, if it doesn't start selling pretty soon in its lifespan no one wants to risk making games on it, so no one buys the machine. Like you said its a tough death spiral to get out of.

frankly it may not be dead yet but there are so many comparisons with the virtual boy to be made in terms of sales and software cancellations.

i do not know what sony could do with the vita, as you say its an amazing piece of hardware but its simply too expensive for a handheld as nintendo found out with the 3ds, a substantial price drop would no doubt help, as would reducing the cost of ownership by slashing the cost of memory cards, some kind of umd upgrade service even if only provided in stores could be managed in combination with a barcode stamp or removal to prevent fraud would ease the transfer from psp to vita whilst allowing psp owners to keep their psp games, and most importantly a selection of handheld type games not just cut down ps3 ports would go a long way too.

the problem as i said above is whether sony could afford to do any of that, maybe in some ways they are right to keep it overpriced, they make a smaller loss on each system that way and if they can keep it limping on for a couple of years then a redesigned system could be made cheaper and allow for a lower price which could increase sales and profits, the question is could they keep publishers on board for that long or even convince them to return once a cheaper model was on sale because without them making more games people may well still decide not to buy it.
