Exclamation More Sony's device to receive Android 4.0 update the next week

    Playstation's Xperia Play won't

Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will start to receive their updates starting from next week

Sony has just announced that they will bring Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to more Xperia devices the next week.

This is Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman receiving the upgrade.

Unfortunately, some devices like the Xperia Play were left out of the ICS equation due to "stability and quality".

According to Sony Mobile's official blog:

Update on Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia™ smartphones

Hello everyone. We’d like to bring you up to speed with recent developments in our Android 4.0 software rollout.

First up, the rollout plans for the Xperia NXT series (Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia U) are progressing as planned. The first smartphone to be upgraded will be Xperia S, starting from the end of June. Then Xperia P will follow, whilst Xperia U will receive it a little later in Q3. As always we will keep you in the loop with the latest info as soon as we can.

For our 2011 range, as you know, we began our Ice Cream Sandwich software upgrade with Xperia arc S, Xperia ray and Xperia neo V last month.

Now, we are happy to confirm that the remaining 2011 smartphones; Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will start to receive their updates starting from next week.

This software upgrade will be Android version 4.0.4 and the good news is that this latest version will also be made available for Xperia arc S, Xperia ray and Xperia neo V users, who received Android 4.0.3 the first time around.

In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich – therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.

This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community; both experienced developers and advanced users, along with game content providers following our ICS beta ROM for unlocked Xperia PLAY smartphones.

Our priority has and always will be, to provide the best possible user experience on Xperia smartphones. In this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability, where we look to ensure a quality gaming experience with games optimized and developed for Xperia PLAY.

In code for the xperia play, it will cost us more to port the software so we won't be doing it. It is clearly the play specific software only that is the problem as lower spec phones inthe range are getting it, you can definetly tell Sony are at the helm solo now. They say it's down to the fact that some games don't play on ICS but then that was to be expected, you just have to wait for the ICS updates, but you will have he same issue soon enugh where games won't work on GB because they need ICS. I bet the Play 2 is on the way and they want to make the Play less attractive, even tho it's only been out a year.

    My gaming systems -
    Consoles - Wii, Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox 360 Jtag Jasper 2TB 3.5" HDD, PS3 60GB UK launch version, PS3 hacked with 500GB 3.5" HDD (2TB wouldn't work ).

    PC - i7 3930K @4.6GHZ, Asus Rampage IV Extreme, 2xRadeon 7970, 32GB DDR3, 4TB Raid HDD (4X Samsung Spinpoint F3, SSD boot drive OCZ Vertex 3 120GB )

These are gaming systems I am biased towards (may as well throw in everything from last gen and before as if the PC can emulate it I am likley to have it)

it will, you'll just need the new version of xperia play (without buttons).

but seriously , its sony and an advertised feature, did you honestly expect them to honor what they say?

I was hoping the Ericsson side of things may have balanced out the Sony factor, but as Sony have taken full controll over the brand I have been having my doubts. But for once I actually believed them, they have made no indication that there were issues up until now, which was the alleged belated release time for the update, and then the Sony factor kicked in, the old screw existing customers, we have their money already approach that has become expected with their other Playstation products int he past few years.

I have been of 2 minds if I should stay with them as I have been a fan of SE phones since the S700, then W810 (best phone i've had so far), W880, W890, W960, W995, X10, XPRERIA PLAY (a downgrade from the X10 for me as I want a phone, personal organiser and caera first, as in the usuall stuff from phones for the past 10 years, before any other gimics, sadly this was the only O2 replacement option for my broken USB port X10). All have been decent phones and have been good enough to make me glad to stick with the brand (ok so I had the iPhone between the W890 and W995 but that was a relay phone, it was passing hands so quick and cheaply that for £20 it was worth a try, and was less annoying that sticking with it to pass it on myself), but now Sony are in full command, I think it's my time to jump ship, Samsung and LG are looking good to me at present.

    stuck at android 2.3.4 forever!

i'm hoping they never release a play phone again, the 1st buyers would have been the ones who had the original xperia play ...but after this...what's the use of buying a new xpensive phone when your not even shure to get the next update!

they have set a great example again, and yes i for once believed they wouldnt go the same route with this...boy was i wrong...
