It's a shame XP 64 never got decent support, as nice as Windows 7 and no doubt 8 will be (even Vista was ok after SP1 and using the 64bit version), XP still delivers the goods with a massively reduced footprint. It's a shame MS don't have the sense to produce a cut down version of XP with 64bit support and DX11 (or 12 which will no doubt be part of Windows 8) and realease it as windows gamer edition, i'm betting they would make a nice wedge off of it. I frequently search the web for a lite edition of windows that has only the most basic of functions (you know, runs the games, has internet connect and web browser, with multi media support as in what we have come to expect since about win95 osr2, but has somehow become bloated from about 100MB to about 10GB but seems to do the same stuff but prettier for most of us), tho not gimped like the lower end editions, that takes up little memory and processor runtime for gaming on laptops, i've yet to find one sadly.

maybe I'll ne in luck with windows 8 as it is designed for phones and tablets as well, so maybe their will be a non gimped lite edition, I just wish I had the know how to tinker with it myself beyond my usuall slipstreaming bits to take the ass pain out of a new installation.

    My gaming systems -
    Consoles - Wii, Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox 360 Jtag Jasper 2TB 3.5" HDD, PS3 60GB UK launch version, PS3 hacked with 500GB 3.5" HDD (2TB wouldn't work ).

    PC - i7 3930K @4.6GHZ, Asus Rampage IV Extreme, 2xRadeon 7970, 32GB DDR3, 4TB Raid HDD (4X Samsung Spinpoint F3, SSD boot drive OCZ Vertex 3 120GB )

These are gaming systems I am biased towards (may as well throw in everything from last gen and before as if the PC can emulate it I am likley to have it)
