Exclamation E3 2012: Sony on going first next-gen: 'It’s about being the best'

According to SCEA boss Jack Tretton.

Jack Tretton: 'We've never been first, we've never been cheapest... the number one goal is to be the best machine'

In a GTTV interview with Jack Tretton, the Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO talked about "next-gen".

He said that "the number one goal is to be the best machine", remarking that quality is more important than getting to market first.

"We've never been first, we've never been cheapest, it's about being best," he said. "And I think if you can build a better machine and it's going to come out a little bit later, that's better than rushing something to market that's going to run out of gas for the long-term.

"I think, ideally, in a perfect world, you want the best machine that ships first, that's cheapest, but the number one goal is to be the best machine and that's what we're always focused on."
He added the following on the subject of PS4:

"In every platform we do, long-term life cycles, diversity and coming up with key franchises that keep people interested in our platform, that's been really the focus through three consoles, two portables, and it'll clearly be our focus going forward in the next generation."
And finally, he talked about the status of supposed PS3 exclusive "Agent" from Rockstar, well, sorta:

“You couldn’t have said it better when you said Agent from Rockstar. I work for Sony Computer Entertainment. The second I start working for Rockstar, I’ll have some definitive information for you on Agent.”
    Good work, Jack!

Expensive and difficult to make games for doesn't make the best, as the PS3 showed, it makes last place. Being powerfull or unique and affordable is what wns the race, and getting out the door early with that can seal, the deal. How is this guy still being allowed to speak for Sony, as if you are going to talk shite it has to have some basis in reality, not cloud cukoo land reality that these sony fools seem to live in.

Lies about the cheapest tho, they certainly were with their most successful console, the PS2. They even cut the price before the Xbox and GC launched to make it even cheaper, and even then they were bottom of the pile on hardware much like the Wii this gen, but it was cheap so lots of people bought it and so it got a hell of a lot of support so was pushed that much harder, so much so that it even looked on a par with the GC and Xbox for the most part (still nothing on it touched the likes of Ninja Gaiden, says somthing when event he PS3 version looked like an only slightly tarted up version of the xbox game), so no by their own success they should see gettig out first (the DC was killed by sega so pretty much was out of the race bt he time the PS2 launched) and selling cheap is what counts, not turning up late and costing more than both of the competions machines combined.

    My gaming systems -
    Consoles - Wii, Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox 360 Jtag Jasper 2TB 3.5" HDD, PS3 60GB UK launch version, PS3 hacked with 500GB 3.5" HDD (2TB wouldn't work ).

    PC - i7 3930K @4.6GHZ, Asus Rampage IV Extreme, 2xRadeon 7970, 32GB DDR3, 4TB Raid HDD (4X Samsung Spinpoint F3, SSD boot drive OCZ Vertex 3 120GB )

These are gaming systems I am biased towards (may as well throw in everything from last gen and before as if the PC can emulate it I am likley to have it)

lol I just am going to cut and paste your post as mine (kidding)

But yeah that says it all right there.

About the only thing I could add is that the PS1 was in no way better than the N64 other then storage capacity and price. The CD's where a lot cheaper to make than carts. Graphics wise the N64 killed the PS1, the PS1 still won though because it was affordable and fun.

Sony seems to have forgotten what got them so much market share in the past, reasonably priced hardware.

    exactly.

the psx was inferior to the saturn in some ways and vastly inferior to the n64.

the ps2 was inferior to the dreamcast and vastly inferior to the xbox and gamecube.

in both cases the cheap, easy to use console won the race by a massive majority, this time sony launched a complete pig of a system at a price unseen since the 3do crashed and burned so horribly and guess which system massacred the others this time? the one that was cheap and easy to use.

as this new generation dawns what is going to happen? well it seems that all 3 will be small upgrades on the current so called hd systems, all seem to be pretty much pc architecture, the main difference between the 3 is that this time all 3 systems will utilize hd or semi hd assets making 3 way multiplatform games almost a certainty, the wii u's gamepad being the only major difference as its standard hardware so can be fully utilized which means that when it comes to deciding which system to buy price will become very important, especially in europe as the euro crashes and burns.
