    Exclamation E3 2012: Sony 'still keen' on 3D, despite E3 no-show

They are still big believer in 3D 'where appropriate'.

According to SCEE president Jim Ryan, the company 'as a whole' still intends to support 3D but only when needed.

Yeah, there was a time when Sony wouldn’t stop talking about 3D.

Well, everyone has noted the company lack of 3D focus in recent E3, including this year's. However, Sony insists that it’s still committed to the technology, but in a more selective way.

SCEE president Jim Ryan talked about it in another E3 interview:

“It's something that's now moving into the mature phase,” Sony Europe CEO Jim Ryan told CVG. “You only have so much time at [E3 presentations] and there was an attempt at yesterday's conference to make it shorter – which I thought was excellent.

“3D was the new thing two years ago – it's not the new thing anymore. It's just part of the bedrock of content development and publishing.”
So, seems that, stereoscopic 3D support isn't "mandatory" for first party Sony games anymore:

“Where appropriate, yes,” Ryan replied when asked if major first-party games still support 3D as standard. “Not where it doesn't make sense, but where appropriate - absolutely.”
So, there you go. 3D is now something they are aiming to invest into when they feel it needs to.

I can't honestly say I have used 3D for any length of time before it either looked little different or in order to be noticable gave me a head ache, and this is despite having 3 3D monitors (only got em as at the time they were the on £15 more each than the ones I was going to get so it was worth giving a try). I really can't get on with the flicker glasses and the whole frame rate lock at 1080p due to HDMI limitations means I tend to go for DVI or VGA which both work perfectly fine with 3D but it's seemingly one of those things manufacturers are trying to force via HDMI (the more I use HDMI the more I am sure it falls behind VGA and HDMI in terms of quality unless you are using anything but a high quality cable so I use it as my last option, even component is above it on my priority list).

My monitors are LG ones using the Cinema 3D, which solves my eye ache from the flicker 3D, plus I can get 1080p 3D at 60fps and not 30 with VGA, but I do loose half the resolution so it's swings and roundabouts. I think luckily for Sony tho in their push, gaming does actually show a more noticable change than movies do (tho oddly films that didn't look very 3D in the cinema do look better in 3D on TV, tho still not much better), so pushing it for gaming is likley a better approach, but that will get chucked in the stingys once a viable head tracking option comes out, ok it's only for one person but for gaming it leaves glasses 3D for dust.
    My gaming systems -
    Consoles - Wii, Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox 360 Jtag Jasper 2TB 3.5" HDD, PS3 60GB UK launch version, PS3 hacked with 500GB 3.5" HDD (2TB wouldn't work ).

    PC - i7 3930K @4.6GHZ, Asus Rampage IV Extreme, 2xRadeon 7970, 32GB DDR3, 4TB Raid HDD (4X Samsung Spinpoint F3, SSD boot drive OCZ Vertex 3 120GB )

These are gaming systems I am biased towards (may as well throw in everything from last gen and before as if the PC can emulate it I am likley to have it)

I'll be in the market for a new TV soon and honestly, if I get a 3DTV it will be because it just happened to have it.

I can't see any benefits worth any extra money for.

if youve ever been to a gadget show, the que's at the 3d screens and the reaction, sure sony are supporting this for gaming, giving game devs the option to include it, but like the 360/pc 3d gaming definately is a good thing.

but its like marmite, you either love it or hate it... or simply hate it because sony support it and you hate sony or you hate it because you cant afford it.
