Exclamation Apple agrees to pay $2.25m fine over 'misleading' iPad claims

    In Australia.

Apple and the ACCC have agreed that Apple should pay a $2.25 million penalty for calling its iPads '4G', as they don't work fully on Australian 4G networks...

If you remember, Apple had to change the new iPad's "WiFi + 4G" name to "WiFi + Cellular" because some countries don't have a real 4G (LTE) infrastructure yet and people "felt cheated" with the device's "misinformation".

Well, now Apple and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have agreed that the company should pay a fine of $2.25m for "misleading" customers in Australia about these data capabilities of its iPad.

Facts agreed on by the ACCC and Apple Australia suggest that Apple's conduct breached consumer laws in four ways — by saying that the new iPad with Wi-Fi and 4G could connect to Telstra's LTE network on:

    - Its web page and online store

    - Its own stores

    - Information and materials provided to resellers

    - Information and materials provided by Apple on reseller sites.

Each of these instances of non-compliance has a maximum potential penalty of $1.1 million, meaning that Apple was originally facing a maximum penalty of $4.4 million. Apple and the ACCC have settled on a penalty of $2.25 million.
The settlement figure must now be approved by a judge before the matter is resolved.

This "little" issue ended to be very troublesome for Apple, but at least the final "penalty" will be pretty low for them.

i think you'll find many countries have a real 4g infrastructure or have one coming, what they dont have is the american only version much like ntsc tv or cdma or even the xbox 360 to an extent (its only number 2 in the us and uk isnt it?).
