Exclamation Sony shares fall to 1980's levels

They are below the 1,000 yen (£8.30) mark

Sony shares were never too low since the Walkman era. The E3 conference didn't help to resolve this.

    Bad times for Sony.

Despite its recent conference on the E3 by its Playstation arm, the shares value is still very low and confirms the decline of the company due to the lack of investor's interest.

    According to Digital Spy:

Shares in Sony have tumbled below the 1,000 yen (£8.30) mark for the first time since 1980, after years of decline at the Japanese firm.

PlayStation console maker Sony, which last night held its press conference at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles, has struggled to turn around its beleaguered TV business, resulting in four years of consecutive annual losses.

The company also failed to keep pace with Apple and Samsung in the mobile devices market, and has seen Microsoft's Xbox eat into its share of video games hardware sales.

The lack of investor confidence in the firm has caused the share price to fall below 1,000 yen for the first time since August 1980, the year after it launched the hugely successful Walkman portable cassette player.

Sony shares dropped to 990 yen (£8.25) on the Tokyo market before recovering slightly on Monday. But this was a far cry from the peak in the share price, at 16,950 yen (£140.17) in March 2000.

The fall coincided with broader woes across the Tokyo stock exchange, as concerns over jobs growth in America, the Eurozone crisis and the slowing Chinese economy led the market to slump to its lowest level in 28 years.

Last month, Sony reported a record annual loss of $5.7 billion (£3.7bn), after PlayStation 3 sales fell from 14.3 million to 13.9 million units over the 12 months.

    Poor Sony.
I wonder what caused this, spending too much on new TV technologies, failed PS Vita, unappealing smart phones..
They don't really deserve this IMO, wish it was the other console makers in the red.

I wonder if they'll focus on the more profitable assets of theirs. PS3 seems to be selling well IMO, even if they sold less than last year.
Imagine that if they focused on PS3/PS4, that could be cool.
They seem to be already dropping prices and they're giving away free digital stuff (quickflix, ps+ games), this drop in shares value could end up a positive for us PS3 users.

Oh they SOOOOOOOOO deserve this. I'm just sad they won't get everything they deserve, as that would imply them closing shop... which sadly won't happen. MS and Nintendo are not saints either, but if there's a console manufacturer RIGHT NOW that deserves the worst, then it's sony.

If Sony's shares keep falling like this, and there is no reason to believe they will not fall more... I can see a real danger of some one pulling a hostile take over.

Nintendo would be funny, but I don't think they would make such a bad investment... Sony is a husk right now they have sold off so much stuff in the back end its not funny. Maybe Microsoft would be interested in them? That would make a better fit since Microsoft has said they would like Xbox to be a home media hub so buying Sony would make some sense for them. I am sure Sony has a nice set of patents they have acquired over the years if they have not sold those off as well.

strangely i'd see apple as the best "fit" now they do tv's, phones, tablets etc and owning sonys music and movie studios would give them huge leverage in the multimedia market.

Hmmm yeah that is rather interesting, it would work I would think for both companies. They both have the same attitude that people should pay more for things than they should. Just some how Apple manages to make it palatable not sure what the secret sauce is, but Sony sure could benefit from it.

EA I don't mind that much... let's face it, as bad as the console manufacturers are, ALL the publishers are 10 times worst. I look forward to the day when all these devs can distribute their games successfully without having to rely on big time publishers. As far as sony, I'm saying if apple buys sony, I can simply concentrate all my hatred on the travesty that would result from the unholy union of both of these putrid mind numbing entities.

sony are publishers that's how they crapped on both devs and customers when twisted metal came out by forcing an online pass onto it this fu*king buyers and the devs who had specifically stated that an online pass would hurt the game by speeding its user depopulation, guess what? the devs were right, preowned buyers didn't bother and the online only game lost users about as fast as the water entered titanic.

and ea are the spawn of satan, the most anti consumer company on the planet and winner of the worst company in america 2012, knocking out sony in the first round of voting.

LOL! as I said before, I think all publishers are hellspawns, and grudgingly I've more or less come to grips with that, but that may just be the me that hasn't bought a video game since sony took geohot to court talking. I've basically bought some android games, and I always "buy" the humble bundles, so I haven't bought ANYTHING from any of these damn crooked publishers in a while.

i've bought a few of the kickstarters (where they were drm free so i could download and burn or they were physical copies) but i still regularly buy wii and 360 games from publishers that sell me complete games, the only ones i miss are any with online passes or effectively game breaking dlc (ie so much it breaks the game like prototype 2), in those cases i look to pick them up preowned later at prices that reflect the value of the actual physical product so the more online / dlc the less i'll pay and of course by buying preowned it ensures that i'm not giving a penny to the greedy scum intent on ripping people off, for games that are so devalued as to make them worthless there is always jtag / neogamma .

Yeah I'll probably start buying games again since I'm waiting for a wii to be delivered, but that will not be anytime soon as I actually bought it so my mom can play the original Super Mario Bros. and Adventure Island, so maybe when she get's bored (if that ever happens). Other than that, I would still buy pre-owned games for my ps3 if they would work on 3.55... and sadly I think I have all >3.55 games that interest me, and I'll be damned if I pay for something like TB. If I had a newer ps3 that I could buy a solderless dual boot-solution it would be great, but I've gotta solder some wires on mine, so that means buying a very good solder iron (which I should actually buy anyways) on top of the actual hardware.... for that I might as well just buy a 360. It would definitely be cheaper if I did that.

well, the only "new" ps3 game i bought since april 1st 2010 was sonic generations collectors edition, i knew it wouldnt work but i missed on getting a 360 copy as it was so limited (i did get a limited edition 360 version), now normally i wouldnt have bought anything for ps3 (especially one that i'd never be able to play (until a 3.55 fix appeared ) but this one had only been opened to examine the contents, the game and additional disc were still sealed, the entire thing was only missing the outer seal but what was most attractive was the limited edition number, since each copy contained a "gold" ring which had the copy number on it, since this was number #2 i figured i had to have it (at least until #1 is on sale )
