Exclamation Sony: Wii U 'is in its own generation'

According to Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida.

Sony dev exec says Wii provided another generation of consoles running in parallel, and will continue with Nintendo's new console.

That's right, Sony sees Nintendo's Wii U as "its own generation".

According to Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida the original Wii kicked off parallel console cycle that will continue with Nintendo's new console.

"I always thought PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are in the same generation, but Wii was not the same," he said. "To me, the industry was growing really fast when those three platforms came up because the focus is so different. The PS3 and the 360 were the closest in terms of high definition and networked services. But Wii carved out a large niche to itself. To me, it was like two generations going at the same time."

Yoshida added, "Wii U is the next generation of Wii. That I understand. To me, it's its own generation."
Also, he was asked if Wii U, which will perhaps get a year's head start on the competition, will be a competitor to the PS4...

"That's a trick question!" Yoshida laughed. "We are not talking about future PlayStation platforms at this E3. But everything competes for consumers' time and money and attention.

"When you talk about the gaming industry today, it's a lot bigger than five years ago - there are a lot more people playing games, on a smartphone, on Facebook, in addition to PC and consoles. It's already multi-platform, way beyond the three - Sony and Microsoft and Nintendo.

"So we are competing with everyone for consumers' attention, not just Nintendo and Microsoft."
The Wii U is due out worldwide this holiday season and its the first Nintendo HD console.

Do you agree with what he said?

in terms of sales he's probably right, in terms of anything else he's wrong as you'd expect from someone speaking for sony.

A gaming console is a gaming console no matter how it is. If Wii was #3, he would brag about how poor Wii did in the competition...

Sony just want to be in 2nd place, but is on third place if they count Wii in.
Why is so many people defending EA, when they are a shit company with yearly shovelware? They even won a prize for it twice.

in terms of everything else he's wrong or is it your blind fanboy eyes.

nintendo never offered dvd playback, media playback, lacked online services like sony and ms offered.

seems the sames happening again, lack of dvd playback inc blueray, its only just claiming to start online services like ms/sony so this here points one error in your comment.

correct, nintendo sell something called games consoles, can you guess what their primary purpose is? oh and the free online did actually work quite well in the VERY few games that used it although of course like with the ps3 it wasn't capable of doing cross game chat although ingame chat worked fine with both wiispeak and headbanger.
