Iwata doubtful about Xbox 720/PS4's graphical leaps

Nintendo is not convinced that PS4 and next Xbox will offer a true graphical leap



That's right, Iwata said next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft may not provide a significant generational leap that consumers are accustomed to,

In a recent interview with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, he detailed his doubts over the PlayStation 4 and the next-gen Xbox.

According to him, these may not provide a significant generational leap that consumers are accustomed to.

"If they decide to increase the spec numbers, will the consumers be able to realise the difference enough so that they can understand it's much superior to today's machine".

He added that -if indeed PS4 and Xbox 720 are going to be significantly more powerful than their predecessors-, developers will struggle:

"If they beef up the processing power, that simply means much more work for software developers to take advantage of those spec numbers. So I have to ask the question if that type of differentiation really makes sense.

He added: "I think further arguments must wait until probably next year, when they have finalised and disclosed whatever they are thinking about for the next generation of consoles."

He's right to doubt the leap in graphics, especially if the ps4 and 720 actually debut with the gpus that were rumored. Those are already a year old, possibly even two years.

is he for real... the current xbox is only running direct x 9 and look at the graphics it can put out... there is a massive jump from 9 to 11 in terms of tesselation and support for gpgpu, which allow for more advanced shadowing techniques, ambient occlusion and depth of field. just look at battlefield 3 on xbox 360 and then compare it to battlefield 3 on a pc maxed out using directx 11, there is a massive difference. This can be greatly improved on the new consoles, as they are dedicated to running a single program compared to a standard pc.
and in terms of making it harder for developers, it is actually much easier, as with tesselation, artists can make lower poly models and they are upscaled on the graphics card. also with techniques for shadows, they can be done much more efficiently using directx 11

Lets look at the real world. Take the best looking PC game at 1080p, and compare it with games like Dantes Inferno (PS3) Uncharted, Gears of War 3, Forza 4, Bayonetta (PS3) etc..

Where is the huge leap?

Atleast the games isnt more fun in 1080p... I run 1900*1200 myself in newest PC games, but its not like wooohaa..

Gaming will die, or swith to cell phone/tablet gaming in developers dont do anything to prevent it. There is more innovation in 6 months on Android games, than there were in 6 years on PS3 and 360.

I agree with Iwata but I still will wait to see, hopefully when graphics reach their cap game studios will focus more on making a quality game.. on another note this is really just wii u advertising.

that is why these execs make all these statements or do interviews because they know they get free publicity when they get reported.

yea well the only reason nintendo can say this is because they didnt make a graphical leap the last gen, so the wii u is going to have a graphical leap compared to the wii because all nintendo did with the wii was revamp a last gen system, so how dare they really to insult the other 2 systems that have already done graphical leaps console after console, when nintendo has only just caught up.

If nintendo are so great erm why havent they made its next gen console do a graphical leap compaired to this gen consoles (soon to be last gen systems)??

Wii-U is only NextGen because it isnt released yet. PS3 and 360 is "CurrentGen".

NextGen consoles is only "Next" if they arent released. Newest consoles already on the market is "CurrentGen".

I'm just telling, and do not point to anyone.

How can a 7 year console like 360, and 6 for PS3 be NextGen when they are old consoles?
