Microsoft gets 'Xbox 8' name rights

Could it be the next console's name?



Microsoft won a dispute over Xbox-related domains including 'Xbox8.us' and 'Xbox8.org'

We still don't know anything official about the successor of the actual Xbox 360 but these days some "relevant" info has been released indirectly such as a domain dispute that Microsoft won related to Xbox8 domain.

According to Fusible:

Microsoft Corporation has won two disputes filed in May with the National Arbitration Forum over a batch of Xbox-related domains owned by a resident of China who goes by the name “Cheng Juan”.

The disputed names include XboxPhone.com, XboxTablet.com, XboxLiveTV.com, XboxCompanion.com, Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org.

While Microsoft’s interest in securing names like XboxLiveTV.com and XboxTablet.com is understandable, the “Xbox 8″ names are a little more puzzling. That is, unless of course, Microsoft has plans for the names beyond just defensively protecting its intellectual property.

At this point, it’s unknown whether Microsoft has any plans to name a future Xbox the “Xbox 8″, but this isn’t the first time speculation has surfaced online that the upcoming Xbox may be called the “Xbox 8″ instead of the “Xbox 720″. Earlier gaming articles discussed whether the next-gen Xbox would be named the XBOX 8 and why Xbox 8 not 720 is a good name.

Windows 8 will no doubt be the next failed release of Windows, joining the ranks of Vista, ME, 98 first edition.

my thought exactly. it fits the theme if the 360 is any way to look at it. forgetting the number, and using location the xbox 8 is just a 360 but twice

Or it could just be a windows 8 intergrated xbox cross platform support site seeing as how they seem focused on merging platforms.

@wewii, I would have agreed with you a couple of months ago infact I would be calling a hell of a lot worse and that was even when you could registry mod it to work just like windoews 7, but as the no old start menu wears off and the new start menu just ends up feeling like a desktop that has all your favourites on it I have gone the other way, I rarely even go to desktop on it now. I think that is 99% of the reason for the dislike for most but everyone I have put the preview on for have said the same thing, utterly hated it with a passion initially, but now love the total simplicity with all the old stuff still there fromt he desktop if you need it, and you can bet even if you still don't like metro there will be a 3rd party start menu even if MS don't see sense to do it themselves. I'll get it for the speed boost alone (mind you i'll be getting Ultimate free from work so just further incentive) as it is noticably quicker than Windows 7 for me.

I look at it this way, back when I was in college in our DTP and CAD rooms we had 1 PC with an early version of Windows 95 on it, I couldn't stand it and neither could most of us who would be forced to use it (you could guarantee it was always the one PC not used even on busy days so if you got in late you had to use it), I would rather use windows 3.11 or even better DOS than that, now it's the basis of what I hated for being lacking form windows 8, so in hindsight it's just change thats the problem andonce you get used to it and see it changes nothing (ok windows is extremely dumbed down compared to what it used to be but that was expected with every service release let alone full OS update, tho it's still no OSX in terms of dumbed down) and improves it a bit onthe speed front not to mention cross pc account linking (I was well happy with the change the basic settings on one like destop, and then watching the other PC's desktops change, an old feature I suspect but new for windows). Don't get me wrong I am no appologist for Windows 8, even tho I like the metro menu now, givent he choice if I could run everything the same on it, i'd still be on windows XP full time or even better, if it had 64bit, DX and ram support, I'd be on Windows 98 for how lightening fast it is on todays machines even in VC

or maybe microsoft do not want other people using their brand name for personal use, microsoft and xbox is a registered brand name that belongs to MS.

If others are using this brand name for their personal use without MS permission then maybe they buy these domains to prevent people thinking its owned by MS and been conned.

Ive had to do the same for my magazines domains, because people in china was trying to pass themselves off as us but with a .com domain.
