Exclamation Obama issues order that 'gives him control of the Internet'

Addresses how the US deals with the Internet during 'natural disasters and security emergencies'

US President Barack Obama has signed an Executive Order that changes the way the US deals with telecommunications in the event of 'an emergency'...

That's right, US President Barack Obama signed last week, an Executive Order that could give the U.S. government control over the Internet.

Titled "Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions", this one empowers agencies with control over telecommunications and the Web during "natural disasters" and "security emergencies".

"The Federal Government must have the ability to communicate at all times and under all circumstances to carry out its most critical and time sensitive missions. Survivable, resilient, enduring, and effective communications, both domestic and international, are essential to enable the executive branch to communicate within itself and with: the legislative and judicial branches; State, local, territorial, and tribal governments; private sector entities; and the public, allies, and other nations. Such communications must be possible under all circumstances to ensure national security, effectively manage emergencies, and improve national resilience."
Critics of the order are concerned with its "Section 5.2", which states that the Secretary of Homeland Security will "oversee the development, testing, implementation, and sustainment" of emergency measures on systems that include private "non-military communications networks."

They claim that this gives Obama "control over the internet" beyond the general ability to suspend communications in extreme cases, which presidents have had for some time.

So, now that SOPA and PIPA are out, do you think this was just a way to find a 'backdoor' to get what they want? After all, it was signed by the President himself and it didn't need voting.

no real shock here after all this corrupt president is owned by hollywood and needs their funds for his re election campaign.

we now know the Xbox One's game licensing policy was written from the ground up for companies. It's aggressively anti-consumer and anti-middle class, and it outright ignores underprivileged gamers. It's gross, despicable, greedy, pathetic, cowardly and out of touch with a growing global resentment for corporations. - Polygon 7th June 2013
