Exclamation 'Oculus Rift' VR gaming goggles launches on Kickstarter

    And already funded!

'Oculus' has launched its ultra-high-tech Virtual Reality headset's Kickstarter project. The campaign blew past its $250,000 goal in hours.

The The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that features ultra-low latency head tracking with 6 degrees of freedom (DOF), 110 degrees diagonal field of view, a resolution of 640x800 per eye, stereoscopic 3D rendering, and weigh around .22 kilograms.

Well, VR enthusiast Palmer Luckey launched a Kickstarter project, so they can ship developer versions of the device by December. And guess what? The campaign blew past its intial $250,000 goal in just a few hours!

    Step inside your favorite game.

Oculus Rift is a new virtual reality (VR) headset designed specifically for video games that will change the way you think about gaming forever. With an incredibly wide field of view, high resolution display, and ultra-low latency head tracking, the Rift provides a truly immersive experience that allows you to step inside your favorite game and explore new worlds like never before.

We're here raising money on Kickstarter to build development kits of the Rift, so we can get them into the hands of developers faster. Kickstarter has proven to be an amazing platform for accelerating big and small ideas alike. We hope you share our excitement about virtual reality, the Rift, and the future of gaming.

    Designed for gamers, by gamers.

The Rift takes 3D gaming to the next level. There are a number of VR headsets out there, but none that deliver a truly immersive gaming experience. Most products either lack the technical features required for believable immersion or sit at a very high price-point ($20,000+) reserved for the military or scientific community.

We set out to change all that with the Rift, which is designed to maximize immersion, comfort, and pure, uninhibited fun, at a price everyone can afford.

Bundling DOOM 3 BFG with the Rift

We're including a copy of DOOM 3 BFG Edition, the first Oculus-ready game, with every Rift dev kit on Kickstarter. John Carmack showed DOOM 3 BFG at E3, stunning the press and creating incredible anticipation for the release.

Join the development process and make your voice heard.

We have plenty of Rift prototypes internally - A few are even out in the wild, in the hands of developers like John Carmack. But we want to make the Rift available to all game developers, today, so they can be part of the development process. Kickstarter makes that possible. Your voice will be critical to making the Rift hardware and software as great as they can be.

I'm really looking forward to this, I hope it launches at a decent price and the screen res is full 1080p HD as this would efectively make the standard 3D options fall by the way side. I know it's meant for gaming but I suspect with such a large view angle it would be great for movies as well and would finally give that cinema screen experience that every other head mounted display I have used has failed to do. I don't know about anyone else but unless the screen is big enough to fill your vision width wise to the point where you may have to move your head then it's not cinema like, as most just look like you are sat a few hundred yards away from the screen at best.

It suprises me that given the ammount of developer support and the fact that the reason this has failed so often in the past due to high cost and poor implimentation, that this would be somthing the big electronics firms would be keeping a careful eye on to see when it would deliver at an affordable price, I guess none want to take the risk. I have to say if the finnished product deleivers, I would be willing to forgo my 18 month PC upgrade to get one of these, i'd even dig out my old medusa surround sound head set, though it shows the family and friends I have that i would have to use this at the desk to prevent getting hit in the nuts, that said may as well throw my dogs in as well as it doesn't matter how I sit or lay down, they jump up straight on my nuts, lts just say they always get my attention

    My gaming systems -
    Consoles - Wii, Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox 360 Jtag Jasper 2TB 3.5" HDD, PS3 60GB UK launch version, PS3 hacked with 500GB 3.5" HDD (2TB wouldn't work ).

    PC - i7 3930K @4.6GHZ, Asus Rampage IV Extreme, 2xRadeon 7970, 32GB DDR3, 4TB Raid HDD (4X Samsung Spinpoint F3, SSD boot drive OCZ Vertex 3 120GB )

These are gaming systems I am biased towards (may as well throw in everything from last gen and before as if the PC can emulate it I am likley to have it)
