Exclamation Xbox 360 Dashboard Beta adds 'Play To' audio/video streaming

    Doesn't require Windows Media Player.

More details for the upcoming fall Dashboard update.
Seems that finally adds the X360 as a target for the 'Play To' functionality in Windows 7/8.

Following with more details for the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard Fall update (currently in BETA), there are reports that it finally adds the device as a target for the "Play To" functionality in Windows 7 and Windows 8.

As shown in the video below from Israeli site TechIT, for the first time you’ll be able to send songs, pictures, and videos to your console by right-clicking on a file and choosing "PlayTo" from the contextual menu. While similar functionality has been possible with the use of the Windows Media Center Extender option, the addition makes Play To sharing native, and doesn't require Windows Media Player.

I suspect this is on because the likes of WMC and WMP are not in the non pro upgrade editions of windows 8 (that goes for standard pro as well). This is more a necessity for windows 8 users than a genuine feature as without it you are more or less FUBAR'd when it comes to streaming if you used WMC/WMP in Windows XP/Vista/7. This is just another side effect of the Google/Motorola patent sham (I would have just seen it as a run of the mill patent case had it not been a non issue prior to Google's take over of the patents as it was not an issue for the years before they did).
    My gaming systems -
    Consoles - Wii, Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox 360 Jtag Jasper 2TB 3.5" HDD, PS3 60GB UK launch version, PS3 hacked with 500GB 3.5" HDD (2TB wouldn't work ).

    PC - i7 3930K @4.6GHZ, Asus Rampage IV Extreme, 2xRadeon 7970, 32GB DDR3, 4TB Raid HDD (4X Samsung Spinpoint F3, SSD boot drive OCZ Vertex 3 120GB )

These are gaming systems I am biased towards (may as well throw in everything from last gen and before as if the PC can emulate it I am likley to have it)

I remember using the same feature one the orignal xbox + xbmc. Pretty great feature. Beats using an HDMI cable or an expensive wireless hdmi transmitter.

This is great. Gives user control on the PC side, instead of browsing the PC on the console side.

I have a love/hate relationship with Windows 7 media streaming. On the love side of things, it's amazing plug in another Windows 7 machine on the network (I have like 4 right now.) and give it the password. Bam all the shares show right up no muss no fuss.

On the hate side of things, I have never been able to successfully set up SMB shares at all, I ended up bypassing the issue using FTP via Filezilla but so many things would just work a LOT better for me if I could set up an SMB share

I probably should mention I am on Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate maybe that has something to do with my SMB problems.

I run Windows 7 64bit Ultimate and had run into problems initially, it's due to the security/auth methods put in place(See; stupid). You need to enable persistent credentials for the network location you're adding, or locally for access TO the machine in question(ie; Local Machine name/IP address + a User/Pass).

Type "Manage Windows Credentials" in the search box, and add as necessary with Enterprise Persistence. And I would suggest disabling the Home Group bullshit as well, it does nothing but cause issues, especially with sharing with non Windows/Older Windows machines.

What so hard about setting up a SMB share on Windows 7.

Never had an issue. Very simple.

If using a home network, Id advise turning off password protection.
