Exclamation Nintendo planning to turn Wii remote into Touchpad

New patent filed by Nintendo reveals new clip-on Accessory for Wii remote that is an Touchpad

We all know Wii U comes with a giant Touchpad controller, well it seems Nintendo is going to downscale that technology for the old Wii remote, maybe for second-player function, or for the old Wii unit

A Japanese patent application filed by Nintendo reveals an accessory you slide on to a Wii remote and turns it into a touchpad.

The magic of mirrors makes the device work. When you touch the pad an infrared LED turns on and the amplified beams from the LED bounce off the mirror and are interpreted by the controller as position data. If you don't touch the pad, the remote works just like a standard Wii remote.

Nintendo proposes their accessory can be used as an in-game drawing pad or to add a mouse pointer interface to a video game.

great idea 5 years too late the ui and many games would really benefit from having the choice of using an ir pad rather than the pointer.

why not just let 4 wii u controllers connect? Not all of them have to be streaming live video from the console. They should really place a small cpu and memory in the controller so 4 can be used as touch during multi player games

because each wii u controller is going to cost a fcuking fortune so its much easier to sell a cheap add on for the wii remotes people already own.
