Wii U sales estimates are really bad...

The NPD Group has released its sales data for January, in which we can see an overall YOY sales spike... but due to an extended month.

The NPD Group sales data for January 2013 is out, and overall, the retail industry rose 9% year over year. However, this was due the fact that it's a “leap month” for the NPD, which occasionally inserts five-week recording periods to keep its tracking in line with the calendar. So, the NPD Group estimates sales were actually down about 19%.

* From video game industry veteran Kevin Dent:

- Hardware.

At the time of this writing, only Microsoft released numbers for the XBOX 360, but there are some estimates for the Wii U and PS Vita (and yes, those are quite bad):

Xbox 360: 281K (+4.07%)

Wii U: ~55K

PS Vita: ~35K

Also, here's some interesting data from NeoGaf users, which compares Wii U's first January with the Wii and GCN ones:

Nintendo home console sales comparisons, January NPD:

GameCube raw numbers, NPD:

NPD Jan 2002: 61,685
NPD Jan 2003: 79,813
NPD Jan 2004: 131,000
NPD, Jan 2005: 112,327
NPD Jan 2006: 66,000

Wii raw numbers, NPD:

NPD Jan 2007 (5 weeks reporting): 436,000
NPD Jan 2008: 274,000
NPD Jan 2009: 679,200
NPD Jan 2010: 465,800
NPD Jan 2011: 319,000
NPD Jan 2012: ~148,000

Wii U raw numbers, NPD:

A Nintendo console has NEVER had numbers in January so low since Iwata has become president. The 45-59K figure is unprecedented. UNPRECEDENTED.
