On DealExtreme there was a kind of Modchip for the Wii which was too good to be true. It was bricksafe because the whole Firmware/OS was backed up. You could hook up a HDD directly to play from it, so that when you got one of these incompatible drives you can start of that thing directly like it was the optical drive. It would be only sticked between the board and the drive, that's it. That thing was insanly cheap. I don'T know the name, but I found something similar called WODE. This one is very expensive and seems to have the same abilities. So could it be that this cheaper version was the same as this wode and if so how is called. I'm nearly into buying a WII again when this could be so safe and easy.

    Can you link to it?

Currently, the only 100% bricksafe method is to completely dump the NAND manually followed by the 100% free software method called bootmii which is uninstalled by official nintendo updates 4.2 and above (when released).

If you dont want to play GC backups, the cheapest method to run backups from USB is a softmod which is mostly flawless expect for where the game switches dol files (the equivelent of .exe files) but workarounds are always available.

Well there is only the Wode at DealExtreme. But that thing is expensive but it looks good and seems to be safe. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.33938 GC Backups and Originals should be playable, too.

The only USB alternatives I know of are the free USB loaders such as USB loader GX which is a softmod.

The only two advantages I can think of are:
    1. USB GC backups
    2. multi-dol support e.g. games such as MPT
    3. It may be slightly faster
    4. Minus region free support it works with updates

If you use SD cards, the Wiikey fusion may be an alternative.

The main disadvantage though to drive mods, etc. like WODE is if new security is introduced an update may be required to work without a softmod.
