The web is an endless source of possibilities, especially for those who love videogames.
Almost anything can be found on the net, from a casino promo code to tutorials (now usually made into videos) about ways to beat that particularly difficult game level, and so on. All of this is beneficial to users, but some of these providers of information unfortunately are forced to succumb to technological evolution.
In fact, after 28 years of activity, Prima Games will close its doors in the spring of 2019, after becoming some years ago a division of Penguin Random House following an acquisition. The publishing house, founded in 1990 in Roseville (California) by Ben Dominitz, will only have the time to print their maxi-guide dedicated to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, an exclusive game for Nintendo Switch coming up at the beginning of December. This is the last work of what has undoubtedly been the most important publishing house dedicated to this specific field of entertainment.
On the other hand, the guide about Anthem, the video game by Electronic Arts for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, will have to be suspended and the book will never see the light. The motivation for the collapse of Prima Games is quite simple and clear: year after year, sales of the guides have been going down steadily even when the books were dedicated to the most successful titles coming out on both PC and all the gaming consoles.
Prima Games has often worked through official partnerships, including one of the most successful with Nintendo. Statistical numbers about Prima Games' publications are incredible as they have published over 1400 guides during their 28 years in the business and sold almost 100 million copies of strategy guides for video games. The first publication to exceed one million copies sold was Myst: The Official Strategy Guide with over 1.250 million copies sold worldwide.
From 2005, besides the publication of printed books, Prima Games has also opened in parallel on its website the sale of electronic guides, some of which were also released free of charge. In 2010, they began to sell their publications also on Steam, the Valve’s digital delivery platform that is number 1 in the sales segment of PC video games. However, this didn’t help the publishing house to avoid closing its doors in the course of next spring.
Therefore, if you are fond of paper guides, the book about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate coming out in the next few weeks could really suit you and in addition to its nostalgic value, it is not to be excluded that over time it could become a volume for collectors.
Below is a very partial list of the many games about which Prima Games has dedicated a guide. SimCity, Titanfall, Battlefield Hardline, Far Cry 4, The Sims 4, DOOM, Dark Souls 3, Rise of The Tomb Raider, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Halo 5: Guardians, Quantum Break, God of War, Destiny 2, Super Mario Odissey, The Evil Within 2, Assassin's Creed Origins, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and many, many others…
