According to the BBC that soon it is no longer going to b illegal to backup you cd and dvd http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14372698 its a step in the right direction
maybe i am missing something here ,is it not a bit ironic that the PS3 has always had the ability to make back ups of your CD's even those with the very worst (or best depends how you look at it) copy protections ,even sony labels. Therefore i am assuming that it is perfectly legal already to make back ups or sony would never have included the feature in a UK region. If so ,why have they never made it possible to make back ups of your DVD's and BLU RAYS or games??
It's is not, and never has been legal to make backups of DVD's or CD's in the UK, we have never had the fair usage poilicy the US had, so we can't even make a legal backup of them for our own use. As for Sony they just make hardware for the world wide market, the same as twin cassette tape players were sold in the UK even though you could'nt use them to copy a tape. Sony or any other company cannot be held reponsible if you use their products to break the law. If the Uk updates the law and makes it legal to make backups they may decide to bring in something like the US's DMCA law, but that will still mean you can't copy DVD's because the DMCA states that you can copy something as long as you don't have to break any protections, and we all know DVD's are protected by various means.
