Grand Theft Auto V is widely regarded as one of the biggest video gaming hits of the last decade, with Marketwatch in 2018 even going so far as to claim that it should be viewed as the most financially successful media title of all time.

However, while you would think interest in a game which has been around since 2013 would be on the wane by now, the title is still going strong thanks to its web-based multiplayer mode GTA Online. Furthermore, Rockstar Games has now confirmed that two new updates released last year helped to drive interest in the online platform to a whole new level.

    A major hit

In a statement released at the end of January, Rockstar confirmed it was offering major bonuses in GTA Online as it celebrates breaking some significant records.

More specifically, it revealed that the service had its biggest series of back-to-back updates ever in terms of player numbers, setting records both in December and in the final three months of 2019. This recent success was attributed to the Diamond Casino & Resort update which emerged in July 2019, as well as the Diamond Casino Heist content launched in December.

Such figures should perhaps not be too surprising considering the very early figures which emerged after the Diamond Casino & Resort update’s launch, with The Hollywood Reporter outlining how it delivered the biggest day and week in player numbers since GTA Online launched in October 2013.

The update has undoubtedly breathed new life into GTA Online, but it does raise one question – what is the secret to its pretty impressive success?

    Range of factors

One factor which will have helped is the fact that there had been discussion and speculation around the launch of the casino within GTA Online for some time, so the update was eagerly anticipated when the first details emerged. Furthermore, with its new storyline, environments and features, it clearly offers plenty of excitement to gamers.

In addition, it could be argued that it also taps into the enduring popularity of casino gaming in all of its forms. The industry has enjoyed a big boost in recent years thanks to online casino sites, which have put an array of different gaming options at people’s fingertips. Furthermore, people do not have to spend money to sample such games either, as some sites offer the option for them to play demo slots for free as they get to grips with some of the titles out there at the moment.

Put simply, the area is in rude health, with research suggesting that the global online gambling market could double in size by 2024.

    More exciting updates to come?

GTA Online has had a huge boost from its most recent updates and it will be fascinating to see if it has more plans up its sleeve for 2020.

Considering the impact that casino gaming has had on the platform, it will also be intriguing to see if any other titles follow its lead and go down a similar route as they look to attract new players.
