Online Gaming is booming, it can be lots of fun as you get to play with players from all over the world. Nearly every game that you buy these days has a multi-player component and whilst these are really good fun, they can also pose risks and opportunities to be taken advantage of by the unwary. We take you through some of the best ways that you can stay safe whilst playing online.

    True Identity

The first and most important thing you should do is to make sure that you don’t reveal any information can be tied back to you personally. You should ensure that your username in any game doesn’t give anything away about you, and you should attempt to remain as anonymous as possible. This is particularly true if you are still a child. It is very important that you never give any information away about your age or other things that might give others clues about you. Something as simple as saying ‘I need to go; I have school in the morning’ can give away too much information about you that allows someone to take advantage of you.

    Personal Information

As well as revealing anything about yourself you should be very wary about revealing any personal information about yourself. This includes things like phone numbers, email addresses, social media accounts and other ways of contacting you outside the game. Online gaming tends to be a much more closed environment than other methods of communication so this means it will be safer. Therefore, don’t tell anyone anything that can be used to contact you outside the game.

    Only Trust Official Sources
If you are talking about the game with other players, then you should always be wary of what they tell you about the game. Less scrupulous players will try and trick you so that they can gain an advantage in the game. The most common way that this happens is that they will tell you of a ‘trick’ that you can use to gain an advantage in the game. This is normally a way for them to get an advantage. It can be either by causing you to lose the game or lose connection to the game. It could, however, be much worse, and cause you to lose your account or access to the games you have paid for. Never download any software for a game outside of an official source, and only trust what official sources say is happening in a game. If you have any doubt about something, then contact the customer service department and ask them about it.

Mute Chat and Report Bad Behaviour

If you don’t need to talk to other players during the game, then mute their channels. This is normally a simple option in most games and will make for a much better experience. Several poor players will attempt to gain an advantage in the game by trying to put players off via voice channels or chat channels. Sometimes this is just annoying behaviour, but occasionally it can become abusive. If someone is saying anything that makes you uncomfortable or makes you upset, then you should ensure that you report the player as soon as you can through the official channels, and block the player when you can. This includes players who are ‘giving you grief’ or repeatedly calling you a ‘noob’. This is just bullying behaviour in a game and it should not be tolerated. Even if you think that nothing will be done about it, you should still report it. It is likely that this isn’t the only time they have done this and the more reports about it the more chance that action will be taken about their behaviour.

Ensure Your System and Games are Up to Date

There are many patches and updates released to games and to systems. Regardless of whether these are PCs, Games Consoles, mobile device or any other type of hardware. These patches are released to prevent security problems and keep you safe online. Therefore, you should ensure that your system is kept up to date to keep you as safe as possible. If you are on a PC you should also ensure that you have an up to date virus scanner.
