Kind of a long shot here and I already know the answer, but it doesn't hurt to ask --- is there any way to get the data off an internal HDD from a fried PS3? Just like everything else in this last year, my luck has been horrifyingly bad and.. naturally... this is the time when my PS3 decides it wants to YLOD (well, flashing red light, but egh.. same thing) on me :( It's a 640GB HDD and it is pretty much full to the brim, so yeah - losing all that data would be decidedly unpleasant. Is there any way to retrieve it yet, or has there been no progress on the HDD-reading front? :(

    Thanks guy.

Oh and no, I can't reball or reflow or do any kind of repairs - I don't have the tools or skill to do it manually and I lost my only source of income last July and have absolutely no money whatsoever with which to pay someone else :(

:( The only thing I can suggest is put that PS3 in the back of your wardrobe and forget about it.

Unless I missed some new developments, hard drive decryption is only available via linux on the PS3(which you already know). Hopefully you have backups of flash, eid root key, and other useful data that may come in handy in future developments which may make a PC tool possible, if at all. Hopefully someone will prove me wrong.

PS It doesn't take any skill whatsoever to reflow(I watched a video and read a great tutorial which gave me an extra year on my PS3 after it ylod'ed)... although you point out the monetary situation and lack of tools so that kind of voids my need to talk about skill factor :(

Yeah, it's a no go :( I can't access the HDD, can't retrieve important data and don't have the tools to reflow or money to pay someone else. Seriously shitty luck this last year :( Thanks anyway.

It's aliiiiiiive! I finally got my baby back, though no way of knowing for how long. I managed to get it reballed a few days ago while wifey and I were on vacation (it cost us 500kr... meh) and - so far - it has been good as gold! All the games I tried are working fine and now I can finally join the rest of the human race in playing The Last of Us :D I also backed up all my important data, so that if (when? :() my system dies again, I can just import to a new HDD on a new PS3 :)

--- sadly I tried to log in on PS3Repack and saw that they BANNED my ass, apparently for having a dupe account which is nuts bullshit, so I'm hoping someone can help me out there. In the meantime though, my baby is back!

It's been a tough year, I'm just glad to be getting some good luck for once (although the good luck of fixing my PS3 was kinda marred by the bad luck of getting banned from Repack, haha) -- I'm going to try my best to be around more often though, so thanks! ^_^

WTF I was wondering why you were banned from Repack - now that I'm a Repack moderator, perhaps I'll try and talk some sense to the administrators and see what they say - same goes for Christian Bale, aka PatBat. :p

Also, welcome back Sabin, and it's good to hear that your PS3 is alive and kicking once again, but from what I heard, a reball is a more longer-term hardware fix than a simple reflow. :)

UPDATE: sabin1981, get your ass over there at PS3Repack - you should be unbanned now.

Thank you gDrive! You're a legend mate <3 It's definitely good to be back, I've missed quite a bit that needs catching up on. What I'm certainly not looking forward to, is fixing EBOOTs that were made incompatible after 3.60 - half my list is all Error 17 >_<

Glad you got your PS3 sorted Sabin :) A re-ball should last quite a while if it's done properly :) I've still got a YLOD that was a DEX convert that I really should get fixed. My working PS3 is the same age (NAND FAT) so it probably hasn't got much time left either.

Also, welcome back to repack ;)

Well, for post-3.55 EBOOTs, if you have Aldo's PS3 Tools installed and you've started up the PKG ContentID in order to enable the Context Menu features, you can just right-click on the affected EBOOTs and just choose "Resign EBOOT (3.55+)" - that's if you wanna go down that route.

    Also, you're welcome. :)

Ooooooooooooooohkay! That sounds a lot easier than the old decrypt>extract>enter contentID>resign>copy hassle I had to go through before :D

In fact it is that easy - only problem is that the EBOOTs signed the Aldo's Tools way WILL NOT be compatible with 3.55 firmwares due to the obvious signing-related reasons.

Suits me just fine, my good man! I have no intention of going back to 3.55 :) Aldo is a freakin' genius, seriously, I still remember his awesome PSX tools from many, many years ago :)

It's all good, Fig! I'm glad you guys helped me out, it's really appreciated :) Now more than ever too.. since it looks like I'll need to replace my entire download collection after my PS3 pitched a fit last night and forced me to format the HDD :'(

"The file system on the system storage is corrupted and will be restored"
"The hard disk's file system is corrupted and must be formatted"
"Cannot start. The appropriate system storage was not found"

I was running Rebug 4.30.2 and it worked perfectly, decided to update to Rogero's 4.46 1.01 and then everything went to hell. ReACT enabled games stopped working, throwing up "copyright protection information is invalid" errors, then I couldn't download/activate anything from PSN nor could I activate/deactivate my PS3 without getting the 80029159 error. I rebooted and was shown the "file system is corrupted" and, well, it went downhill from there :( I lost all my downloads, saves, installed, trophies, etcetera, the lot. Gone. Blank PS3 >_< Oh well.

Damn Sabin - you really are hitting the jackpot of bad luck recently! :(

Speaking of crapped-out HDDs, before you start using that HDD, check it with CrystalDiskInfo or ang other software to check its health status.

Tell me about it, heh. Oh well.. nothing to be done about it now except try and get back what I lost :) That's a good point about health checking the disk and it shouldn't matter about the encryption as it's checking the physical health.
